Syntorial on Fedora

I’m interested in electronic music, and I like programming synths in Overtone, CSound and so on. While I know a lot of signal theory since my days as an engineering student, I’m not always aware of the corresponding music vocabulary. Syntorial is a nice tutorial software that teaches how to program a synth for various sounds. The only real problem with it is that it’s proprietary and not open source. This would normally make me dismiss the software at the outset.

Im sorry to say that Fedora 22 on Microsoft Surface Pro 2 exhibits many regressions as compared to Fedora 21 on the same hardware. I have a dual boot setup so I can boot between the two versions and compare. Heres the regressions I have found so far. I can’t get the Marvell wifi chipset to work. This was problematic with Fedora 21 as well, but there I could replace the distributed firmware with firmware from the Marvell kernel git repository, and make wifi function.

Fusk med FPM

(This article was originally published by Datormagazin.

Birds With Luminus

My son wanted some help with some homework. He had an assignment where you listened to birds on a birdsite, and identified them. The site lets you type a name of a bird, shows an image and plays the birds song. My son wanted the birds to appear in random, withouth titles and so on. The site didnt allow for any customization however. So, to provide the automation you can either do a client side hack, or a server side hack.

For my Sylt project https://github.com/jave/overtone-sylt, I wanted a very simple and robust way to stream the output from a jackd sound server to a client machine on the network. There are many ways to do this, but a pretty simple way is to use VLC. An advantage over netjack, which is another method, is that you can do it after-the-fact. You can start jackd and do things locally. Then you can attach a listener, and remove it on the fly.

See-Through LCD Screen

I made a see-through LCD screen. It is very easy, if you have the right screen to begin with. I had several cheap VGA LCD screens. I took one apart, and removed the back-lighning. Then you need to consider where the electronics are situated. I my case the electronics are on a circuit board, which you can put in an L shape behind, or vertically with, the screen. You can tape the construction to a window, and enjoy a see-through screen!

After having used Fedora on the MS Surface pro 2 for a couple of months, I have some gripes with it. It works mostly okay, but the battery behaves weirdly. Sometimes the charging level is not reported properly, and then the machine tends to shut down randomly. So perhaps this was fixed in a UEFI bios upgrade Microsoft provided, but how does one upgrade the UEFI bios if one doesnt run Windows on the machine?
